Some examples of poor photo manipulation are easy to spot. Heck, some are downright awful. Such as designers who have clearly used stock photography and then accidentally left random additonals extra hands (or arms, or legs) appearing in an image (or possibly ommited them entirely) but have let them go to print for a major cosmetic company anyway (and while I'd name specific examples here, the truth is almost every cosmetic and/or fashion company has done this at some point).
Then there are those that are just shockingly awful examples of body manipulation (Ralph Lauren’s Photoshop Disasters, I'm looking at you).
But sometimes it's subtle, and a little harder to spot, which is where todays "Clever tip for developing a media savvy eye" comes from - sometimes you have to flip the image to see it.
That's right, turn it upside down, look at in a mirror, and BINGO! that sense of unease you had about an image a moment ago will crystallise as you realise exactly why it just didn't feel "natural".
It's the same with illustration and cartooning, and yep, that sketch there at the top of the page? well, it's an example of failing that test, guess I'll be redrawing it soon.
So until Tomorrow and the inevitable Chickens,
Cheers,
-K
